To the bottom: 50 Years of NJBG Gorinchem and surroundings

50 years

It was in the summer of 1970 that Claas van Kuilenburg told his HAVO-4 classmates Rolf van Acquoy, Bert Stamkot and Wim Voogt about his plans in Gorinchem, a local branch of the Dutch Youth Association for the Study of History (NJBG) to be established. He had already been an active member of the national youth association for a number of years.

In addition to the national range of activities, Claas also wanted to organize local activities. Another Gorkumer, Bob Nater, had already become a member through his mediation. It was this group of five that met for the first time on Thursday, August 27, 1970 at 20.00:XNUMX PM in the clubhouse of the SAH (a radio play club of which Bert, Rolf and Wim were members) on the Vogelensangsteeg and drew up a plan of campaign.

After the minimum number of ten members prescribed by the main association had been reached, the founding meeting followed on 17 December 1971 in the garage of Rolf van Acquoy's parents. Afterwards, Rolf's mother treated everyone present to soup and from that day on Gorinchem had its own NJBG department.

Working Group External Research

The national NJBG was an association where interest in archaeology flourished. Highlights were the summer camps every year, where archaeologists from the National Service for Archaeological Heritage (ROB) an excavation was central. The 'father' of the NJBG, prof. dr. Renaud, guaranteed the excavation of castle foundations.

Although the experience with excavations at the brand new Gorcum department was limited, direct contact was made with regional representatives of the ROB and the AWN, as Arnold de Haan and Fred van den Beemt. AWN member Huib de Kok gave us an introductory course in field exploration using our own soil drill at the traffic circle and in the Arkelse Vrouwenhuiswaard. A committee working group loot investigation (CWBO) was set up within the department. Claas van Kuilenburg and Bert Stamkot were officially provided with a proof of identity indicating that we were authorised to conduct test drilling within the municipality.

A visit to the former (monastery) farm 'Oudenhage' near the Arkelse Dam did not lead to permission, but we did receive a block of natural stone that was provided with a molding profile. The library in the Pesthuys was filled with books of this kind, but also with a skeleton delivered by the police! The vacant Kazerneplein was screened for shards and a monastery mop was fished out of the ditch along the Dalemsedijk, where on a wall of the castle of the Arkels was bumped. With their own tape measure and poles this area was mapped out. Although there was little to do in fact, the turnout and enthusiasm were infectious, but it was also essential for the board and the CWBO to go for the 'real thing' as soon as possible.

Mill 'Neverthought'

Less than a week later, my attention was drawn to a message in the Brabants Dagblad of September 12, 1972, in which the mayor of Woudrichem advocated the reconstruction of the building that had been blown up in 1945. mill 'Neverthought'. We were immediately on the doorstep and offered our services. The octagonal mill foundations proved to be easy to trace and together with the Rotterdam department we were able to do a considerable amount of work, especially during the autumn holiday, staying in the local barracks. We mapped the foundations and added a proposal for redevelopment. The remains were unsuitable for reconstruction, the mill was placed a little further away years later.

Langendijk 71

1973 was the year of the excavation at Langendijk 71, where the old building had burned down and catering entrepreneur Huub van Capel wanted to build something new. Here too, we offered to investigate the foundations within – nothing less – the framework of 'city centre research', which was a major project in Dordrecht under the leadership of provincial archaeologist Herbert Sarfatij, who was also kind enough to assist us with good advice. The Langendijk was extremely busy on Saturdays and visitors also flocked to our stand to rummage through bins of shards, or else the photo club came by for a shoot of our toiling backs amidst the ever higher foundations. These walls were also mapped, with hearths, tiled floors and tiled skirting boards. The national NJBG youth and autumn camps also participated in the excavation.

In particular, some of our then youngest members have taken up the archaeological torch with even more energy. For example, Henk Hovenkamp dug at his homestead Loevestein and contributed enormously to the knowledge about the outer bailey. An exhibition of objects found by him attracted 25.000 visitors! Peter von Hout explored the Arkelse Kerkbuurt and the outer floodplain and was able to support the tenth-century mention of Arkel on the basis of Pingsdorf and other shards. He shifted his attention to the Gorcum earthenware production of pots and especially tobacco pipes, which culminated in a publication about that industry in the Netherlands' second pipe city (after Gouda).

The demolition for the Hema (1977) on the Gasthuisstraat and the vacant Zieken-Gasthuisterrein (including the old and our own plague house) around 1981 attracted many a tracker, the first metal detectors also buzzed, but they did not respond to the many 'gruesome' bones. Besides Peter, Martin Veen also seriously hung around here, still unconsciously inhaling his future. Awareness of the rules of the game was well developed at the NJBG, it was they who called on the municipality to ban treasure hunters from outside the city.

Human remains and the first archaeological exhibition in the Haarstraat (1981)

Gorinchem Historical Soil Research Foundation

After the demolition of the De Vijfheerenlanden hotel on the Haarstraat, archaeological finds found there were exhibited in 1981 in the Rabobank built on site, which had also acted as a sponsor. The time was therefore ripe for Martin to establish the Stichting Historisch Bodemonderzoek Gorinchem (SHBG) together with Ruurd van Donkelaar and Rob Krielaart, also on behalf of the NJBG (November 1983). A display case with archaeological material was subsequently set up in the museum 'Dit is in Bethlehem' in 1985.

In 1989, the foundation organised a course in regional historical research together with the national NJBG, but two years later Peter von Hout stated that the department was now defunct. In 1992, Jeroen van de Vliet tried to reactivate the Gorcum NJBG by starting excavation campaigns in the Spaarpot- and Revetsteeg. He received support for this from the SHBG and the Cultural Council of Gorinchem. Jeroen also asked for attention for the upcoming work on the Betuwe railway line. From the main association, Van de Vliet continued to pay attention to Gorinchem as camp secretary and youth camps were organised in the city (Nonnenveld) and the surrounding area. But during the NJBG reunion of 1996, there was no memory of this anymore and the department already seemed like a young, stale memory.

Archaeology becomes a municipal task

In 1994/1995 Martin Veen (as SHBG) and Teus Korevaar took the initiative on behalf of the AWN to set up a 'Guidance committee for archaeological research in Gorinchem'. Municipal secretary Felix Cerutti initially acted as chairman and appointed policy officer Ina Heerspink (later succeeded by Wieteke van Hulten) as secretary. She was charged with archaeological policy for a number of hours per week. Archivist Arnold Busch was asked to act as chairman (after his retirement he was succeeded by René van Dijk). In addition to the SHBG, AWN, the municipality, the City Archives, were also Old Gorcum. Then Gorcum's Museum and the NJBG in the person of Jeroen van der Vliet, represented. From 1996 part-time city archaeologist Pieter Floore also participated in this company. It was therefore primarily an 'official working group'.

Volunteers

At the first 'formal' excavation at the Blijenhoek under Floore's leadership, the use of volunteers was immediately considered. Students from the gymnasium and the RSG and members of Oud-Gorcum and the AWN went to work. The first core of what is now known as 'Community Archaeology' is mentioned. Within three years this turned out to be a fairly stable group, which was also ready when called upon.

Some of them became involved in the processing of the finds, such as Toos Busch and shortly afterwards Tiny Wijnen and Martin van der Vliet. These are the first volunteers of the municipal depot, which has now been given a beautiful home.

Martin Veen started building a website early on, which since then has provided a wealth of information, both photos of finds and the many project reports. Eventually, he also found his work in the field in House of Hilde, the archaeology museum of the province of North Holland in Castricum.

Department magazine Scriptum Caspingium

Like every local NJBG branch, Gorinchem also had its own magazine: 'Scriptum Caspingium', named after the Roman settlement Caspingium on the Peutinger mapIn addition to the input from our own members, articles were also published by Gorcum historians and even some nationally known historians.

Especially in the period of editor-in-chief Rolf van Acquoy, the quality of the magazine reached a peak. Regularly publishing the SC proved to be not always easy in the later years. Each editor-in-chief collected or wrote copy himself and typed it with the typewriter on stencils that were difficult to correct. There was often little time because of the approaching final exams.

Members of the Photo Committee in the heart of the Gorcum urban redevelopment (1971)

In addition to photos of all department activities, the Photo Committee also made a series of slides of interesting buildings in the Gorcum city centre. The urban redevelopment in the 70s resulted in much deforestation.

In 2021, these images provide an interesting picture of the condition of the monuments around 1971. Some of them have since disappeared. The photos can also be found on flickr.com

The condition of the remaining foundations was investigated. In addition to masonry and a few floor levels, a number of wall tiles and a small pipe clay statue of Christ were also found. The excavation work attracted a lot of interest from the shopping public. It was also the first time that an excavation took place in Gorinchem.
