Research
Commissioned by Mr. and Mrs. Van der Sanden, ADC ArcheoProjects a desk study and inventory field study in the form of an exploratory and mapping drilling study carried out for the plan area Merwededijk 13 – 14 in Gorinchem. Two houses were built in the plan area.
The research was carried out as part of a project procedure for a change in the zoning plan and an application for a building permit and was necessary to determine whether the proposed activities would affect archaeological remains in the subsurface.
Expectations
The plan area is located within a residential strip that probably dates back to the Late Middle Ages. Therefore, there is a chance that archaeological values from the Late Middle Ages and the Modern period are present. On the cadastral minute from 1811 - 1832, there is construction around the plan area. At the location of the current house, there has certainly been a building since 1895.
In the plan area, mainly raised packages were expected. Foundations of former buildings may also have been present. No statements could be made about the thickness of the raised packages or the depth of any foundations that may have been present. The limited available data did not allow the complex type and the size of the expected remains to be specified in more detail. In connection with the construction of the house and the industrial building, as well as demolition work on the site of the plan area, any archaeological remains that may have been present could already have been disturbed.
Already disturbed
The raised package found is related to previous construction in the plan area. This construction certainly has an origin in the 19de century, a late medieval origin cannot be ruled out on the basis of the present research.
It was assumed that the current construction within the plan area, the residential building and the industrial warehouse, had disturbed any values present at the location of the construction. During the planned soil intervention, a total of 65 m² of undeveloped surface was disturbed. This surface fell within the exemption standard of the municipality of Gorinchem that applies to areas with a moderate expectation for remains from the Late Middle Ages and the Modern Period. Therefore, further research was not considered necessary. ADC ArcheoProjecten therefore advised to release the site for the intended development.
