Location of the Holocene stream belts in relation to the plan area

Commissioned by the municipality of Gorinchem, RAAP Archaeological Consultancy In March 2010, an archaeological field study was carried out in connection with the planned construction of a parking facility in the municipality of Gorinchem.

The aim of this research was first to acquire information on known and expected archaeological values by means of desk research in order to formulate a specified expectation. The aim of the field research was then to test that expectation and, as far as possible, to give an initial impression of the nature, size, dating, quality (completeness and preservation) and depth of any archaeological sites encountered. Based on the research results and the nature and size of the proposed soil interventions in the plan area, advice was then formulated regarding archaeological follow-up research.

No archaeological sites found

Based on the results of the desk research, at the start of the field research, there was a high expectation for the discovery of valuable (intact) archaeological remains from the Late Iron Age to the Roman period in the northwestern part of the plan area near the Spijk stream belt. A medium-high expectation applied for the Late Middle Ages. During the field research, no indications for the presence of (an) intact archaeological site(s) were found in the plan area.

Given the research results and the proposed interventions in the plan area, it was concluded that the implementation of these would probably not disturb any archaeological values. On this basis, it was recommended not to have any additional archaeological preliminary research carried out and to release the plan area.
