Grote Markt | Wilhelmina Fountain (1898)

Grote Markt Wilhelmina Fountain 1898Central to the Grote Markt state the Wilhelmina Fountain from 1898 made by L. Schütz of the Schütz zinc factory in Zeist. On the occasion of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the reign of King William III In 1889 a permit was requested to place a fountain on the Grote Markt. That did not happen then, but it did in 1898. The Classicist water fountain, the basin of which was designed by Johannes de Bie, was unveiled in 1898. Due to the accession to the throne of Wilhelmina in that year, the fountain “Wilhelmina Fountain” will be called.

The fountain stands in a four-lobed stepped basin of artificial stone that is placed on a base of hard stone steps. In the corners of the basin are four gargoyle frogs. The fountain itself consists of a zinc column on which a woman stands with a palm branch and laurel wreath. The column stands in a basin that is carried by two herons and dolphins. On the corners of the basin are four masks as gargoyles. The base of the basin is placed on an artificial granite base. In it is engraved: “Queen Wilhelmina August 31, 1898”.
