The Holy Spirit Chapel at Arkelstraat 28 in Gorinchem has had various functions over the centuries:
- The chapel probably dates from the 15th century (although some sources mention the 13th century as the date of foundation).
- Until about 1572 the Holy Spirit Fathers managed the chapel. From here distributions to the poor were made.
- After the Reformation, the chapel served for a time as a second church for the Protestants.
- The chapel was used by the Walloon community from 1797 to 1799.
- Between 1799 and 1814 it was again the church building for the Dutch Reformed Church.
- From 1814 to 1816 the Lutherans used the chapel.
- From 1816 to 1824 it was used for the second time by the Walloon municipality.
- In 1825 the city bought the now dilapidated chapel. In 1836 part was demolished and replaced by new construction.
- In 1837 the meat hall moved from the town hall to the chapel.
- From 1844 to 1851 the chapel briefly served as a church again, when the Grote Kerk was demolished and rebuilt.
- Nowadays the chapel houses a clothing store.
