The permit holder's proposal followed after the evaluation report of the archaeological research became known, a research that was mandatory in the context of the permit procedure for the construction of a hotel Buiten de Waterpoort. This research showed that, based on physical and content criteria, there is an archaeological site worth preserving. Following this evaluation report, consultations were held between the municipality and the permit holder. The aim of this consultation was to see whether a suitable solution was possible that would do justice to both the archaeological finds and the construction plan. The consultations resulted in a proposal from the permit holder in which the finds are incorporated into the hotel to be built.

To this end, the finds that are now above ground are incorporated into the floor construction of the new building, by placing them on the finished floor level of the 1e to fit and finish the building layer so that it remains visible in the floor. For this purpose, 0 to a maximum of 35 cm of the finds will be removed locally. In addition, research will be conducted into the location of remains still present underground, so that the foundation and pile plan can be adjusted accordingly. In addition, the permit holder offers space to investigate the possibility of setting up an information point in the conference room of the hotel for the purpose of city promotion. Here, visitors can be informed about the archaeological finds, for example.

Response from the competent authority

The board of mayor and aldermen of Gorinchem is positive about the proposal of the permit holder. The proposal fits in well with local and national policy whereby 'in situ conservation' preference. In addition, it is in line with the recommendations of SOB Research, who carried out the archaeological research on behalf of the permit holder. Furthermore, the proposal does justice to the archaeological values and also makes them permanently visible in the floor of the hotel. In view of the responses received from citizens and institutions, the board therefore believes that it is a good proposal. However, it was agreed that the board would only take a definitive position on the proposal after consultation with the municipal council.

Result of consultation with the municipal council

When asked, the municipal council expressed itself positively about the permit holder's proposal and the intention of the board. This means that the permit holder now receives approval from the municipality to carry out the feasibility study and, if proven feasible, to carry it out.
