On Tuesday, November 7, 2017, Hollandia Archeologists from Zaandijk started an excavation of the former cemetery on the Green Market-Behind the ChurchThe research is necessary in connection with the planting of four lime trees at this location as part of the redevelopment of this area.
The work is estimated to take 2 weeks. The locations to be excavated are protected by fencing. It is still possible to look through a few openings in the fence.
Cemetery
As in many villages and towns, the church was the centre of the settlement. In 1263 a Saint Martin consecrated church was put into use. The tower was badly damaged in a storm in 1361 and was replaced by the current tower, which was built between 1450 and 1517. It is possible that the deceased were buried on the consecrated ground around the church building from the time the first church in Gorcum was built.
Dozens of skeletons expected
It is expected that several dozen graves will be found in the coming weeks. All skeletons will be carefully recovered, after which an extensive physical anthropological investigation will take place. Excavating, documenting and analyzing human skeletal material is a time-consuming task. The final results will therefore not be available for another 1 to 2 years.
Earlier, during a survey in 2008, 53 individuals were recovered from this site and extensively examined.
