De Gorcumse Wederdoper Arent Jansz. te Amsterdam in 1536 onthalsd
Series: Gorcumse Oudheden Author: W.A. van der Donk Publication year: 1958 Pages: 2 File size: 828 KB More DetailsIn 1535, Arent Jansz. van Gorinchem was arrested in Amsterdam for his involvement with the Anabaptists. The Amsterdam city council sent a letter to Gorinchem to obtain information about Arent. The Anabaptists wanted to make Amsterdam the "New Jerusalem" and launched a failed attack on Dam Square on March 22, 1534. On February 11, 1535, a bizarre act of nudism took place. In May 1535, armed Anabaptists unsuccessfully occupied the town hall. Arent Jansz. was beheaded on March 6, 1536. The peaceful Anabaptists, founded by Menno Simonsz., should not be confused with the fanatical Anabaptists led by Jan Beukelsz. from Leiden, who founded the "New Sion" in Münster.
