Iets over Gorcum’s oudste stadrecht (1287)
Series: Gorcumse Oudheden Author: W.A. van der Donk Publication year: 1932 Pages: 11 File size: 1,5 MB More DetailsGorinchem likely obtained its first city charter between January 15 and July 4, 1287, based on two documents that use the terms "burghers," "freedom," and "city." Before February 23, 1281, Gorinchem had no city charter, as it was still referred to as a "villa" (village) in a document from that date. The precise date of granting city charter between these two dates is unknown, but it must have occurred sometime during that period. The completion of Gorinchem's city walls also occurred around this time. The second, more well-known city charter was granted in 1382 by Otto van Arkel.
