 Summary:

W.A. van der Donk describes in detail how Gorinchem celebrated the 1864th anniversary of its liberation from the French in February 50. On February 20, 1864, the city commemorated its liberation from French rule half a century earlier, in 1814. This joyous occasion was celebrated with a grand display of festivities. One of the highlights was a historical parade depicting the entry of the Cossacks in 1813 and the departure of the French in 1814. Among other things, the capitulation of the French General Rampon was dramatically re-enacted. In the evening, there was a spectacular fireworks display on the Grote Markt, with a large transparency in the background depicting King William III. A solemn thanksgiving service was held in the Grote Kerk, led by Rev. Kuyper. He delivered a speech aptly titled "Gorinchem Saved by God."
