The history of the spelling of the place names Gorinchem and Woudrichem
Series: Gorcum Antiquities Author: WA van der Donk Publication year: 1938 Pages: 16 File size: 1,6 MB More DetailsThe place name Gorinchem appears much more frequently in writings from the period 1160–1560 than the name Gorcum. The spelling Gorinchem, with its variations, is the most frequent and oldest form. Gorcum is a corruption of Gorinchem that later became common parlance.
A similar conclusion applies to Woudrichem: Woudrichem is the oldest form, and Woerkum is a later corruption. The spelling variations of both place names can be traced back to differences in the first, second, or third syllable. The assumption that Gorkum holds the oldest rights is scientifically untenable.
