The basis for the archaeology policy in Gorinchem was developed in 2009 jointly with seven other municipalities in the Alblasserwaard-Vijfheerenlanden region as a way of fulfilling the new tasks and powers that municipalities were given with the introduction of the Archaeological Monuments Care Act (WAMZ) in 2007. Together with the municipality of Molenlanden, this policy was updated and expanded in 2021.
The archaeology policy indicates how both municipalities want to deal with archaeology. The starting point is to preserve the archaeological heritage in the soil as much as possible. If disturbance is necessary, the 'disturber' is asked on the basis of a Program of Requirements (PvE) first of all, to have archaeological (preliminary) research carried out by a KNA certified research agency.
Where from 2009 onwards the policy was mainly focused on land soils and remained limited to the early 20th century, the 2021 update also includes water-related heritage. Also new is the special attention for conflict archaeology with an inventory of military relics from the late Middle Ages to the Cold War.
Expectation and policy map
Eand part of the municipal archaeology policy is the creation and updating of a expectation and policy map. This map shows in detail the known archaeological sites and the locations where there is an increased chance of finding archaeological remains during soil movements. When preparing spatial plans, it is an instrument to determine whether prior research is necessary. The map is in line with the Cultural-historical Main Structure (CHS) of the province of South Holland.
