Soil profile of Hoornestraat

Soil profile of Hoornestraat

In May 2004, Hollandia Archaeologists an inventory soil survey carried out on the site of the former nursery school on Van Hoornestraat in the Lingewijk, in response to the construction plans for seven houses there.

Based on the soil conditions found on site, it could be determined that prehistoric habitation in the area under investigation would have been virtually impossible. There are therefore no indications of habitation or other use of the terrain in prehistory. The calcareous poldervaag soils and in particular the heavy bowl clay are today almost exclusively used as grassland.

Brickworks

In the Late Middle Ages, these grounds would have been excellent for pasture. There was also probably a brickworks in the area during this period, as evidenced by the brick misfires and bricks without mortar in the filling of two ditches (both without further finds). It probably concerned a peripheral area with parcel ditches.

Zandvoort

It was not until the 30s that the use of the land as arable or pasture land came to an end and the Lingewijk was built, popularly also called Zandvoort, after the sand that was used as a raising layer. A large quantity of pottery and glass from the 20s was recovered from the reclamation and raising layer of this district. Contrary to oral tradition, this levelling layer was not metres thick, but only 20 cm.
