Drilling research

The reason for this research was the proposed zoning plan change for the location. The field research aimed to refine the archaeological expectation from the desk research by means of field observations and thus to arrive at an advice regarding possible follow-up steps in the AMZ cycle.

The research location was located directly north of the Merwede floodplains. As a result, the location had a high expectation of archaeological remains on or near the surface. On the bank deposits of the Merwede, archaeological remains from the period from the Early Middle Ages could be expected. Deposits from the Gorkum-Arkel stream belt were possibly still present at the location, on which remains from the Neolithic period could be expected. In any case, the location was in use from the beginning of the 19de century undeveloped.

Advice

The field research has shown that there are no bank deposits of the Merwede at the research location. Crevasse deposits of the Gorkum-Arkel stream belt are present deeper in the subsurface. Bank and bed deposits of an early Holocene stream belt were also found below this. No traces of soil formation were observed on either the crevasse deposits of the Gorkum-Arkel stream belt or the bank deposits of the early Holocene stream belt, which shows that these deposits were probably not attractive for habitation. As a result, no archaeological values were probably threatened during the planned work and release was advised.
