Low Dalemseweg plan area High Dalem

High Dalem 2006

From September 12 to 15, 2006, Hollandia Archeology an inventory field study carried out in the Hoogdalem plan area in the municipality of Gorinchem. The study took place on a plot of land on Laag Dalemseweg. Housing construction was planned in the area.

Preliminary research had resulted in the suspicion that there could be remains of a medieval site on the spot. The municipality of Gorinchem commissioned archaeological research to map the possible site or sites. The municipality's objective was to include the results of the research as much as possible in the plan development

No evidence was found during the trial trench investigation for the presence of remains of a medieval or older site on the spot or in the vicinity of the investigated site. The only anthropogenic traces found under the tillage are recent drains, which occur throughout the site. The shards found by TURN were collected during the mapping research are either the only remains of a completely disturbed site on this terrain, or they were brought from elsewhere. The site could have been completely disturbed, because the layer in which the tracks should have been dug has been incorporated into the tillage by ploughing. The finds could have been brought from elsewhere as part of soil improvement or fertilisation. It is also possible that the top of the current belt with the remains of a settlement - levelled over time by agricultural activities and scattered over another part of the site.
