Research
On June 19, 2006, BILAN received from ASVZ South West order to carry out an archaeological preliminary investigation in the Haarweg 23 plan area. The reason for this investigation was the planned demolition of the existing buildings and construction of two houses.
Because the soil was disturbed in places where this had not been done before, an archaeological preliminary investigation had to take place. The aim of the investigation was to determine the archaeological expectation of the plan area. This investigation consisted of a desk study, supplemented with an inventory field study in the form of drillings.
Power belt
According to various sources, the results of the desk study showed that the plan area has a low (IKAW) to high (CHS) archaeological expectation, which was mainly based on the presence of the river Spijk belt in the subsurface. The CHS The designated zone with a high archaeological probability was wider than the one on the IKAW and also covered the plan area. However, during the field research no indications were found for this stream belt in the plan area. From this it could be concluded that this stream belt is (as expected based on the available sources) located further south of the plan area.
Disturbances
Based on the results of the field research, the soil in the plan area can be classified as non-lime polder vague soils. In the northern part of the plan area, brick and pottery from the Modern Period were found up to a depth of 110 cm –mv, which indicates a disturbance of the soil up to this depth. These finds indicate that the soil was stirred in the past, for reasons as yet unknown, and show that a site from the Modern Period can be expected in the plan area or in the immediate vicinity thereof.
Because soil disturbing activities in the area were limited to a maximum of 50 cm below ground level, no further research was recommended.
