GORINCHEM – During excavation work behind the Gorcum Museum, yesterday skeletons were found again on the Groenmarkt. The 'digging' is related to the placement of an underground waste container.
Two years ago, excavation work around the Gorcum Great Tower also quite a few skeletons were dug up. Until 1830 people were buried around the tower. After that, burial was only allowed outside the city limits.
Four layers of skeletons have been found in the pit. Archaeologist Martin Veen: “When a weighbridge was installed, more layers were removed. They have now also found a rubble layer with monastery bricks. It is not yet clear what the origin of that is.”
