Research
In February 2018, Hollandia archaeologists commissioned by Allinq an archaeological desk study and a subsequent inventory field study by means of exploratory drilling carried out at the fifth Uitgang 5 in Gorinchem.
The reason for the research is the intention of the client to build a transmission tower within the research area. The planned activities may result in the disturbance of any archaeological remains present in the subsurface. The aim of the research is to formulate a specified archaeological expectation at an early stage of the activities and to supplement this by means of the inventory field research.
Conclusion
The archaeological desk research has shown that the research area is located on an old bastion that is part of the fortification of Gorinchem. The archaeological policy map indicates that it concerns an area with high archaeological expectations. Historical maps show that the area was built at the beginning of the 17de century within the city walls and became part of bastion 11. Partly on the basis of this, there was high expectation of finding archaeological traces from the Modern Period.
The inventory field research by means of exploratory drilling has shown that there is a thick raising package in the form of clay at great depth. In this package there were no indications of archaeological traces worth preserving.
Advice
Based on the archaeological desk research and the subsequent field research by means of exploratory drilling, it is advised not to take any archaeological follow-up steps. However, this does not mean that the site has been released. If archaeological traces do come to light during the work, the competent authority, in this case the municipality of Gorinchem, must be informed of this in accordance with the Heritage Act.
