GORINCHEM — The Archaeological Working Group Gorinchem has suffered thousands of guilders in damages due to theft. At the excavation site on the Gorcumse Barracks Square unknown persons have taken various archaeological finds. The beer barrel, which was discovered earlier this week, has been destroyed.
The perpetrators first emptied the waste bin. It is not known whether any valuable objects came out of the barrel. The barrel originally served as a water well, but when it was no longer needed it was used as a cesspool.
The missing finds include seventeenth-century glassware and pottery from the same period.
