Research
The reason for this research was the plan of the housing association Port 6 to demolish the existing buildings at Keizerstraat 44 and replace them with eight apartments. Previous research at the Keizerstraat 2A en Keizerstraat 6 it was known that there were remains of the medieval city wall in this area.
During the trial trench investigation, a total of 8 traces were found. These belong to one structure with possibly two construction phases. It concerns a (storage) cellar that, based on the size of the bricks and tiles used, dates from the middle of the 17de century can be dated. Shortly afterwards the cellar was converted into a beer cellar. For both construction phases old building materials were used, possibly originating from the disused and demolished city wall. Tracks 1 - 3 are of a later date and are probably related to the demolition of the structure in the 19de or 20th century. During the archaeological research, various finds were made during both the construction of the area and in the tracks.
Finds
The finds can be divided into the material categories ceramics (ceramic building material and utility pottery), clay pipes, metal, glass, natural stone and (animal) bone. The ceramic building material found dates mainly from the 16de /17th to 18thde century. A total of 350 pottery fragments were collected, dating from the 16de all 19de century, and more than 150 from clay pipes that can be dated to the 17de-18de century. There were also 27 fragments of glass found that could not be dated precisely. During the construction of the test trench, 40 fragments of metal were found, consisting of tools and other (household) objects, as well as construction material. During the archaeological investigation, only animal bone was found that was in the taphonomic group of consumer waste.
Conclusion
The results of the archaeological research gave rise to adjustments in the proposed construction plans at the research location.
