GORINCHEM – It is a bitter pill to swallow for many of the city's residents. The school on the Chalk Street, the place where thousands of Gorcumers learned to read and write over the years, is no more. Demolition workers ran away with the building opposite the St. Janstoren, where until a few years ago several immigrant associations were housed. Protests by Gorcumers who appealed to historical awareness were in vain, the characteristic building makes way for the V&D department store, for which part of the Struisvogelstraat has also been demolished.
And that is a contrast with the so-called Waterstaat Church further on in the HaarstraatThe tower of this former almshouse, now an apartment complex, stands in an ingenious-looking scaffolding.
