GORINCHEM – A memorial will be placed opposite the V&D for the Court of ArkelThe monument will be placed in the Struisvogelstraat, at the Kazernepoort. The remains of the Hof van Arkel were uncovered during the work for the V&D.
An important find for local archaeology, because not much was known about the Van Arkel family. They were 'in power' in Gorinchem in the thirteenth century and owned, in addition to the majestic residence (the Hof), a castle on the riverThe first foundations were already excavated in 1815, near the Dalempoort.
The memorial for the Court, a 'historical column', costs 6700 euros, an amount paid from the urban renewal fund.
