Chalk Street: looking for the Van Arkels' court

This week, archaeologists have been at the site where the Chalk Street a V&D fortress finds traces of the 14e century court of the Van Arkels. Almost nothing is known about this court except that in 1405 the house of Jan van Arkel stood here.

It is also hoped that remains will be found of the old City School that, according to the chronicles, stood on this site between 1547 and 1606. After 1606, the school continued as the 'City Latin School', the forerunner of the current gymnasium.

On Open Monument Day the location can be visited and explanations will be given during two guided tours that are planned for 11.00:14.00 and 4:XNUMX. Interested parties can register five minutes before the start of the tour at the address Struisvogelstraat XNUMX (former housing information)

The excavations are being carried out by the research and consultancy agency BAAC, which specializes in building history and archaeology, municipal archaeologist Pieter Floore and a number of enthusiastic volunteers from the Archaeology Working Group. They started their research on August 12. It will be completed at the end of September. An interesting discovery was made with the discovery of a pewter pilgrim badge from the 15e or early 16'se century.
