GORINCHEM – The Open Monument Day was well attended in Gorinchem last Saturday. Some came from far and wide, others were just residents of the city who took advantage of the opportunity to visit buildings and places. For example, the Chalk Street guided tours were given with text and explanation about the archaeological research that is currently taking place there for another two weeks.
In this photo Pieter Floore explains to interested parties that the foundations of two fairly large houses can be seen on the spot where the Hof Van Arkel must have stood before. Six hundred year old cesspits have also been dug open. A good source of information about what people ate back then. A few visitors examined the settled shit themselves. A nice excursion at the last minute. In two weeks the construction of the new V&D will start.
