GORINCHEM – The festive unveiling of a monument in the city centre of Gorinchem has been postponed indefinitely, because the municipality forgot to apply for a building permit for the memorial. The building permit is needed, because the monument on Struisvogelstraat is part of the protected cityscape.
The two-meter high column was discovered last year during archaeological excavations at the construction site of the recently opened V&D. The authentic column is most likely part of the Court of Arkel, which was the noble residence of Jan van Arkel was.
The municipality of Gorinchem will apply for a building permit for the already placed monument in the short term. If no objections are received, the memorial can still be officially unveiled in a few weeks.
