Arkelse Onderweg-kop Ice Rink 2008

From January 21 to 25, 2008, BAAC 's‑Hertogenbosch a study conducted at the location Kop van de IJsbaan on the Arkelse Onderweg in Gorinchem. This is a site where a farm stood until 1998.

The farm was probably built in the late 19^de century and consisted of a living area on the south side and a stable area on the north side. The front door was located in the east wall of the living area. Directly next to the west wall, outside the farm, there was a brick well and a toilet. The well was later reused as a cesspool. In a cellar in the farm, a wooden barrel was placed under a tile, which may have served as a scrubbing pit. A toll was found in the barrel.

The main research question was whether the farm had predecessors, possibly dating back to the development period. The location is on a riverbank that served as a development base for the development of 'Hoogland'. Especially after the embankment of the Linge in the 13^de century the area would be suitable for habitation. However, nothing has been found of predecessors of the farm. The terrain appeared to have only been used for habitation in the Modern Era. For this purpose, a package of late medieval bricks and two layers of elevation were applied to the natural subsoil.

The raised layers probably date from the 17th century.^de/​18th century. Most of the finds come from the raised layers. Among them was a fragment of a sword from before the middle of the 17th century.^de century, various coins and pottery, mainly from the period 1600 – 1800.
